Porosity and Hair Color — Why Can the Same Formula Give Different Results?

The same color, the same developer and the same processing time do not always produce the same result. In professional color work, porosity is one of the key factors that influences how hair absorbs pigment, how intense the result appears and how stable the color remains.

1. Porosity affects pigment uptake

Low-porosity hair has a more compact surface, which can make pigment penetrate more slowly. More porous hair may absorb color faster and appear more intense.

For the stylist, this means assessing not only the starting level, but also the condition and structure of the hair before building the formula.

2. Regrowth, mid-lengths and ends may react differently

Natural regrowth, previously colored lengths and repeatedly lightened ends often have different levels of porosity.

That is why using one formula throughout the entire head is not always the best approach. Different zones may require different techniques, processing times or product choices.

3. Porous hair may take color quickly, but lose it faster

An intense result immediately after the service does not automatically mean strong color retention.

Highly sensitized hair may absorb pigment quickly while releasing it faster during subsequent washes. This is why preparation and aftercare are just as important as shade selection.

4. Hair preparation can help create a more even result

When porosity is uneven, preparation before coloring can make a significant difference.

Products such as Czarodziej Koloru Equalizer Spray pH 4.5 can support work on lengths with varying condition. For heavily sensitized hair, prior reconstruction with products such as S-Power Reconstructor or Fast BTX may also be beneficial.

5. Porosity also affects shine and the way color is perceived

A color can be technically correct and still appear less intense on highly porous hair.

The more uneven the hair surface, the more light is scattered. That is why smoothing and conditioning products used after coloring can improve shine and the visual depth of the color.

Products that support professional work with porosity

Within the Fleuria Benelux portfolio, stylists can work with:

  • Les Fleurs D’O color systems,
  • Equalizer Spray pH 4.5,
  • S-Power Reconstructor,
  • Fast BTX,
  • Post-Color products,
  • smoothing and laminating lines from Czarodziej Koloru.

With porosity, the question is not only which color you choose.

It is also what kind of hair that color has to work on.
